Fun on the Beach!

June 16, 2010

Spending quality time with one’s family is extremely beneficial! As a father, I understand how important it is to my children to play and have FUN with them. Quality time does not need to be something “big” nor does it have to cost a lot of money. The little things we do for our children will ultimately make a big impact in their lives.

While spending time on the beach, I was able to spend time “sweatin’ the small stuff” and making the ripple effect in the lives of my children. Having fun in the waves quickly reminded me how important doing the little things are in the lives of others.

Having fun on the beach was very inspirational to me and my family! Spending quality time with my family enabled me to be a better Christian father modeling the importance of being a servant leader.

Please check out “Sweatin’ the Small Stuff” to learn principles that will assist you in developing, motivating and leading others.

First, Jared, my oldest son and co-author of “Sweatin’ the Small Stuff,” and I want to tell you what this book is not. The book is not a “how-to” leadership book. We believe successful leadership to be contextual in nature, and the ways in which lessons are communicated vary from person to person. Second, let us tell you what we want this book to accomplish for you. We want you to be able to use it as a simple tool. Within the pages of the book are short stories from people we believe in, people we have respect for and ultimately people who possess qualities we admired and wanted to learn more about through their stories. We have given careful thought and prayer while planning the format of the book, corresponding with the individuals who have graciously given us their stories and hopefully writing it in a user-friendly format. Rev. Tom True, Minister and Administrator of the United Methodist Church Indiana Conference, wrote the foreword to the book. In his foreword, Rev. True writes, “…Kirk has also chosen to live out his leadership style with faith in God and to live it with the family as well as in his professional career. Indeed, this book seems to be a venture in leadership, faith, and family as the father and son have joined efforts, and together they are exercising their understanding of, their eye for, and their ability to do the small things that encourage others to recognize and build on their own leadership strengths…They do not write this book from the pedestal of their own perfection or from the mountaintop of having turned a corporation from failure to monetary success. Instead they are deeply involved in the ‘small stuff’ of recognizing the undeniable leadership skills and principles displayed by other ‘ordinary people who live next door’ and people they personally encountered in their daily adventures of life….So if you are like me and enjoy the experience of learning by discovering the gems of life hidden in the drama of daily living like mushrooms hiding in an Indiana springime just waiting to be plucked up by an avid hunter, then this book is an exciting read for you…Jared and Kirk do not shy away from using their own mistakes as well as their successes in putting together this wonderful array of leadership ‘real-life stories’ that captivates the heart and soul as well as the mind. In a very artful manner, they draw the reader into an indirect dialogue that invites the readers to become involved in the learning process as we begin to identify, recognize, and comit to including these simple, small practices in our own ability to respond to life….Go ahead and read, enjoy, learn, and make a difference as you sweat the small stuff! Blessings!” Ultimately, I want this book to serve as motivation to become better tomorrow than you are today, no matter what that means to each person. By reading the stories found within the book, “Sweatin’ the Small Stuff,” I hope you leave feeling entertained and even a bit enlightened, armed with new stories from new people. My prayer is that the lessons learned from the stories will validate the importance of sweatin’ the small stuff. Enjoy!
